Statue of King Alfred

King Alfred's Statue Winchester

King Alfred’s teacher training College Winchester was one of the first to be established in the country.

The student’s register 1840 1872  is a fascinating read and we have decided to undertake it as part of our transcriptions collection, which you can access for free, just click on sign up at the top of the home page and you will receive a daily update of new historical events, news and resources.

The transcription will take us a little while, it is a very, very big book but we will add to the database each week, so keep watching!

Why choose this data to transcribe?

The register is quite a personal record of students and gives a unique look at the character of the individual. The data fits between census years and depending on the individual there is lots of it!

An example of some of the details available, age, station in life, residence of family or friends, health, temper, peculiar talents, schools attended, fathers occupation and more besides
